Local Garden Care in Coburg

Your GMC Team in Coburg

Coburg is a large, established suburb along Sydney Road with an unusually broad mix of housing โ€” Victorian and Edwardian near the centre, post-war brick veneer through the middle, and continuous new infill and townhouse development.

What we know about Coburg gardens

  • That housing mix means Coburg gardens range from tiny period courtyards to wide post-war backyards, and the right maintenance approach is completely different for each.
  • Long-standing boundary hedges are a defining feature of Coburg's older streets; broadleaf species can be renovated hard in early spring, conifers cannot be reduced at all.
  • The Merri Creek side of the suburb sits on heavy clay that needs coring and organic matter to stop lawns alternating between bog and concrete.

Gardening in Coburg

About Coburg

Coburg runs from Moreland Road in the south up to Gaffney Street and Murray Road, with the Merri Creek and Elizabeth Street on its eastern side. Robert Hoddle surveyed a village reserve here in 1837 and 1838, and the settlement was first called Pentridge; the name changed to Coburg in 1870, partly to separate the district from the prison's reputation. Bluestone quarrying began in the 1850s, and by 1875 there were 41 quarries, with prisoners at Pentridge put to breaking stone for road surfaces. Today Sydney Road is the spine of the suburb, and Coburg Lake Reserve, formed by a weir built on the Merri Creek in 1915, is its best-known open space.

Soil, water and weather

The bluestone that built so much of Coburg came out of the ground beneath it. At Coburg Lake the Merri Creek is held in by basalt outcrops, and across the suburb the soil is clay over that rock, so in some gardens a spade will strike stone when digging new beds or post holes. Clay over basalt drains slowly. That suits deep-rooted shrubs once they are established, but a new plant set into a dug hole can sit in water as if in a bucket. Planting slightly proud of the surrounding soil and mulching well gets most plants through their first winter.

Jobs that suit Coburg gardens

  • Lawn mowing: Lawns in Coburg range from a strip of grass in front of a terrace to a full backyard on a post-war block, so pricing runs from about $45 for a small lawn to $50 to $65 for a standard front and back. Edging and a tidy-up come with every mow.
  • Rubbish removal: Townhouse builds and renovations across Coburg leave behind rubble, offcuts and spoil that has to go before a garden can go in. Rubbish removal is quoted per load, and garden waste can go out in the same trip.
  • Commercial maintenance: Shops, offices and units along the Sydney Road corridor often have small garden beds, planter boxes and nature strips that need regular attention. Commercial maintenance is quoted per site, on a schedule that suits the business.

Questions

Coburg Garden Care FAQ

Why do I keep hitting rock when digging in my Coburg garden?

Much of Coburg sits on basalt, the bluestone that was quarried here from the 1850s, and in some gardens the clay over the rock is thin. For new beds it is often easier to build up with good soil than to dig down into stone.

Do you cover both the Sydney Road side and the Merri Creek side of Coburg?

Yes, the whole suburb, from Moreland Road up to Gaffney Street and from the western streets across to the Merri Creek. Coburg is about 6 km from our Glenroy base, and quotes are free on 0448 215 297.

What lawn suits a small Coburg backyard?

Where fences and buildings shade part of the day, a soft-leaf buffalo usually copes best. Couch and kikuyu want full sun and tend to creep into garden beds. In very small or heavily shaded yards, mulch, paving or synthetic turf is often the more practical choice.

Do you provide lawn mowing in Coburg?
