Local Garden Care in Hadfield
Your GMC Team in Hadfield
Hadfield is a compact, established residential suburb north of Coburg, made up almost entirely of post-war family homes on regular blocks. Gardens are practical, generous and often still carry their original planting.
What we know about Hadfield gardens
- Hadfield's original 1950s and 60s gardens frequently have overgrown shrubs and hedges that can be brought back properly rather than removed, if they are cut in early spring.
- The regular, level blocks here make for straightforward mowing, and a consistent fortnightly round keeps lawns dense enough to resist weed invasion.
- Clay soils under most of Hadfield mean winter waterlogging in the low corner of the yard is common โ usually compaction rather than rainfall, and fixable.

About Hadfield
Hadfield is a compact grid of streets between Glenroy and Fawkner, bounded by Hilton Street to the north, Sydney Road to the east, West Street to the west, and South Street and Boundary Road to the south. Like its neighbours it began as part of John Pascoe Fawkner's estate, and most of the building came after the Second World War, with the post office opening in 1957. The suburb is named after Rupert Hadfield, a president of the Broadmeadows Shire Council. The West Street shops are the local centre, the Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park is one of its major features, and the Merlynston Creek runs through on its way south. The old Hadfield High School site is now a retirement village.
Soil, water and weather
Hadfield sits on the same basalt clay as the rest of the plain between the Moonee Ponds and Merri creeks, and the Merlynston Creek drains the streets either side of it. Reactive clay swells when it is wet and shrinks as it dries, which is why lawn edges can pull away from paths and driveways by late summer. Winter nights are cold here too; the nearest Bureau of Meteorology station, at Melbourne Airport, averages a July minimum of 5.5ยฐC. Couch and kikuyu lawns stop growing and turn straw-coloured in that cold, then green up again once the soil warms in spring.
Jobs that suit Hadfield gardens
- Lawn mowing: Hadfield's regular house blocks mostly sit in the standard family lawn band on our pricing guide, around $50 to $65 for a front and back lawn. Through winter the visits can be spaced out while the grass is barely growing, then brought closer together again from September.
- Hedge trimming: Front hedges planted in the 1950s and 1960s line plenty of Hadfield streets. Trimming starts from $60, and a hedge that has been left alone for several years is better reduced over two or three visits than cut back hard in one go.
- Garden clean ups: When a long-held Hadfield home is being readied for sale or for new owners, the garden usually needs a full reset: beds weeded, shrubs cut back, lawn edged. Clean ups are quoted per job, and the green waste leaves with us on the day.

Questions
Hadfield Garden Care FAQ
Is Hadfield in the same postcode as Glenroy?
Yes. Hadfield shares the 3046 postcode with Glenroy and Oak Park, and like them it is in the City of Merri-bek. It sits between Glenroy and Fawkner, about 3 km from our Glenroy base in a straight line.
Why has my Hadfield lawn gone brown over winter?
If it is couch or kikuyu, it is almost certainly winter dormancy rather than damage. Both grasses stop growing once the soil turns cold, and Hadfield's July nights are cold. The colour comes back as the soil warms in spring, and a light feed in September helps it along.
Can mowing and a hedge trim be quoted together in Hadfield?
Yes. Many Hadfield front gardens have both a lawn and a hedge, and the two can be priced as one job. Mowing starts from $45 and hedge trimming from $60, and the price is confirmed with you before any work starts.
