Local Garden Care in Fawkner
Your GMC Team in Fawkner
Fawkner is an established suburb with a strong community feel, bordered by the Merri Creek and home to extensive reserves. Gardens range from classic post-war front yards to fully updated family spaces, often with productive fruit trees at the rear.
What we know about Fawkner gardens
- Fawkner's established street trees create a leafy character but also heavy autumn leaf fall โ gutter and lawn clearing is a standard seasonal job here.
- The Merri Creek corridor brings native bird life, and many Fawkner gardens are planted with natives to support it; those beds need low-phosphorus feed, not lawn fertiliser.
- Mature front hedges are common throughout Fawkner and hold a much better face on a scheduled trim than on an annual catch-up cut.

About Fawkner
The main part of Fawkner runs from Boundary Road, where it meets Coburg North, up to the Western Ring Road, with the Merri Creek on its eastern side and Sydney Road and the Upfield railway line on the west. The area was first known as Box Forest and took the Fawkner name in 1867. The railway in 1889 and the Fawkner General Cemetery in 1906 brought the first houses, returned soldiers settled in the 1920s, and the big change came from 1949, when the Housing Commission built through to the 1960s, including the Moomba Park estate. North Fawkner was a dairy farm until 1945. The pool opened in 1964 and the library in 1969, and the Merri Creek frontage remains a long stretch of open space.
Soil, water and weather
An early settler near the Merri Creek described this area in 1902 as a harsh, windy place with few trees, and the exposure has not changed much. Fawkner is mostly open basalt country, and the Bureau of Meteorology's Melbourne Airport station records August to October as the windiest months of the year. Spring wind dries out new plantings and lawns faster than the temperature suggests, which makes it the season when mulch and a deep watering count most. In summer the clay cracks as it dries, and those cracks are a sign the lawn needs a long soak rather than a quick spray.
Jobs that suit Fawkner gardens
- Garden clean ups: Housing Commission-era backyards in Fawkner were laid out with room for fruit trees, vegetable beds and sheds, and many have filled up over the decades. A clean up that clears overgrowth and old beds is quoted per job, with the green waste removed the same day.
- Lawn mowing: Fawkner house lots mostly carry a standard front and back lawn, which our pricing guide puts at around $50 to $65 a visit. Corner blocks and larger lots move into the large lawn band, from about $70.
- Synthetic turf: A small front lawn that browns off every summer in Fawkner's wind and sun can be swapped for synthetic turf. It is quoted per job after measuring the area and checking the base underneath, and it takes the watering out of the equation.

Questions
Fawkner Garden Care FAQ
Is all of Fawkner in the City of Merri-bek?
Almost all of it. The main residential area south of the Western Ring Road is in the City of Merri-bek. A small northern part that runs up to Camp Road and Mahoneys Road is in the City of Hume. We cover both sides of the Ring Road.
What should I plant in a windy Fawkner front yard?
Low, tough shrubs with small or grey leaves handle Fawkner's spring winds better than soft, large-leaved plants. Westringia, correa and lomandra are good starting points, set into a deep layer of mulch so the clay underneath does not dry out and crack.
