Local Garden Care in Brunswick
Your GMC Team in Brunswick
Brunswick is one of Melbourne's densest and most varied inner suburbs โ Victorian terraces and worker's cottages, converted warehouses, and continuous new apartment development along Sydney Road. Gardens here are courtyards, light wells and rooftops rather than backyards.
What we know about Brunswick gardens
- Most Brunswick gardens are under 60 square metres and enclosed on three sides, so knowing exactly how much direct sun each corner gets matters more than any other decision.
- Single-fronted properties usually have no side access at all, which means green waste is bagged and carried through the house or out to a rear laneway.
- North and west brick walls store heat all day and radiate it into the evening, so pots against them need to sit 200-300mm clear and hold dry-climate planting.

Gardening in Brunswick
About Brunswick
Brunswick's street pattern still follows its first survey: long strips of land running east and west from the central road, now Sydney Road, to either the Moonee Ponds Creek or the Merri Creek, between what became Moreland Road and Park Street. The Wurundjeri name for the area, Bulleke-bek, means flat country, and at least one early buyer gave up on his land because it was too marshy. From the 1850s, quarries and brickworks using the local clay and bluestone became the biggest industry, and a railway line ran straight into the Hoffman brickworks. Textiles followed in the early 1900s. Today Sydney Road is the main strip, the northern end of Lygon Street forms the border with Brunswick East, and RMIT has a campus here.
Soil, water and weather
The clay that made Brunswick's bricks is the same clay under its gardens, and in an old courtyard it can be buried beneath decades of fill, rubble and earlier paving. That mix drains poorly, so planter boxes and raised beds filled with fresh soil usually do better than digging into the original ground. Being close to the city helps in winter: the Bureau of Meteorology's Olympic Park station averages a July minimum of 7.5ยฐC, two degrees warmer than at Melbourne Airport, so frost is less of a worry here. Root space and summer dryness are the bigger limits on what will grow.
Jobs that suit Brunswick gardens
- Garden clean ups: Brunswick has a large student population, and a rental changeover often leaves a courtyard that needs weeding, cutting back and clearing before the next tenant moves in. Clean ups are quoted per job, with the green waste removed on the day.
- Synthetic turf: Where a small rear yard gets too little sun for real grass, synthetic turf gives a usable green surface with no mowing. It is quoted per job after measuring and checking the base, which in older yards can mean clearing rubble or broken concrete first.
- Hedge trimming: Climbers and screening plants along shared walls and fences grow fast in a sheltered courtyard. Trimming starts from $60, and regular trims make it far easier to keep growth off gutters, cables and the neighbours' roof.

Questions
Brunswick Garden Care FAQ
Can you work in a Brunswick courtyard with no side access?
Yes. When you ask for a quote, tell us how the garden is reached, whether through the house, a garage or a rear laneway, because access affects how long a job takes and so the price. Green waste is bagged up and taken away on the day.
Is Brunswick too far from Glenroy for regular mowing?
No. Brunswick is about 8 km from our Glenroy base in a straight line, and small courtyard lawns start from around $45 a visit on our pricing guide. Ring 0448 215 297 for a free quote.
What grows in a shady Brunswick courtyard?
Shade-tolerant plants with modest roots do best, such as clivia, hellebores, ferns and dwarf lilly pilly in large pots or raised beds. Lawn rarely thrives with less than about four hours of direct sun, so in a deeply shaded yard paving, gravel or synthetic turf is often the better choice.
