Local Garden Care in Preston
Your GMC Team in Preston
Preston is a large, established northern suburb centred on High Street and the market precinct, with post-war family homes on generous blocks and a strong tradition of productive backyard gardens.
What we know about Preston gardens
- Preston backyards are among the most productive in Melbourne โ lemons, figs, olives, grapes and vegetables โ and each wants pruning in its own window, not all in one winter weekend.
- The generous block sizes here produce serious green waste volume in a catch-up clean-up, well beyond what a fortnightly council bin can take.
- Lawn under a mature fruit tree loses to shade and root competition every time; mulching the root zone out to the drip line solves it permanently.

About Preston
Robert Hoddle surveyed Preston in 1837, and the district's early name, Irishtown, came from its first permanent settler, Samuel Jeffrey, who arrived in 1841. In 1850 Edward Wood opened a store and the first post office at High Street and Wood Street, and members of a Baptist congregation who met there renamed the district after a village near their old home in Sussex. Hotels and shops then grew around the junction of High Street and Plenty Road, two kilometres south, where the Preston Hotel of 1856 and The Junction of 1861 still stand. Ground too poor to farm was dug for pottery and brick clay. In 1952 a migrant hostel of Nissen huts went up on flat land near the Darebin Creek.
Soil, water and weather
Preston sits on the volcanic basalt plain, and the heavy clay beneath its gardens is the same material that once supplied local potteries and brickmakers. It holds nutrients well but drains slowly, shrinks as it dries and sets almost like brick in a dry February. Digging in compost each autumn, never working beds while they are wet and keeping a layer of mulch over the root zone make it far easier to manage. Hot northerly winds in summer dry out exposed backyards quickly, so citrus and young trees need a deep soak every so often rather than a light daily sprinkle.
Jobs that suit Preston gardens
- Hedge trimming: Many Preston frontages have a hedge or a row of shrubs planted decades ago along the fence. Hedge trimming starts from $60, and a broadleaf hedge that has grown wide over the footpath can usually be narrowed in stages rather than removed.
- Rubbish removal: Clearing a Preston garage or backyard often turns up old timber, broken pots, pavers and cuttings that a green bin will not take. Rubbish removal is quoted per load, for green waste and general household rubbish alike.
- Commercial maintenance: Shops and small apartment blocks along and behind High Street often have a strip of garden or lawn at the front that nobody is responsible for. Commercial maintenance is quoted per site and keeps those frontages on a regular schedule.

Questions
Preston Garden Care FAQ
When should I prune the fruit trees in my Preston backyard?
Most deciduous fruit trees, such as figs, plums and apples, are pruned in winter while they are bare. Apricots and cherries are better pruned in dry weather after harvest, which lowers the risk of disease getting into the cuts. Citrus only needs a light tidy after fruiting.
Which council looks after Preston?
Preston is in the City of Darebin. Reservoir borders it to the north and Thornbury to the south, Coburg and Coburg North lie across the Merri Creek to the west, and Heidelberg West and Bellfield are to the east.
Can you take away the prunings after a big fruit tree cut?
We do. Prunings from figs, olives, citrus and other backyard trees leave with us on the day as part of a clean up, so nothing sits by the kerb waiting for bin day. Larger loads of mixed rubbish are quoted per load.
