Local Garden Care in Yuroke

Your GMC Team in Yuroke

Yuroke is a rural locality on Mickleham Road between Greenvale and Mickleham, outside the Urban Growth Boundary. Instead of housing estates it is made up of farms, acreage homes and open paddocks, so the grounds here are large and the outdoor work is about managing land as much as tending a garden.

What we know about Yuroke gardens

  • Big lawns and house paddocks in Yuroke are better on a set schedule than cut whenever they get away, because spring growth on open acreage quickly becomes too long and heavy for a quick tidy.
  • Where a long driveway is lined with trees or shrubs, keeping overhanging branches and side growth trimmed back stops them scraping vehicles and keeps sight lines clear at the gate.
  • With open country on every side, wind and sun hit the garden around the house hard. Shelter planting and a thick layer of mulch help beds hold their moisture through summer.

Gardening in Yuroke

About Yuroke

Yuroke is a small rural locality on Mickleham Road, between Greenvale to the south and Mickleham to the north, and it sits outside the Urban Growth Boundary. The name comes from an Aboriginal word whose meaning is unclear, and it was also the name of the land parish that Greenvale was originally part of. A post office opened around 1902 and closed in 1975. While Greenvale, Craigieburn and Mickleham have filled with housing estates around it, Yuroke has stayed as farms, acreage homes and open country, with only a very small number of residents. That makes the outdoor work here very different from the suburban streets next door.

Soil, water and weather

Yuroke is on the volcanic plain, with heavy clay soils and very little shelter between paddocks. The nearest long-running Bureau of Meteorology station is at Melbourne Airport, to the south, where rainfall averages about 537 mm a year, January days average 26.7ยฐC and the windiest months run from August to October. On open acreage that combination dries grass out quickly once summer arrives. Grass around buildings and along fence lines is best kept short from late spring, and garden beds near the house do better with thick mulch and plants chosen for dry, windy conditions.

Jobs that suit Yuroke gardens

  • Lawn mowing: Yuroke's house paddocks and big lawns sit in the large lawn band on our pricing page, around $70 to $110 or more a visit, and full acreage is quoted on size. A regular schedule through spring stops the growth getting away.
  • Hedge trimming: Windbreaks and shelter belts protect houses and gardens from the wind across the open plain. Trimming them regularly keeps them dense from the base up instead of thin and leggy. Hedge work starts from $60 and long runs are quoted.
  • Rubbish removal: Rural properties gather old fencing, timber, sheds and general rubbish over the years, as well as green waste. Rubbish removal is quoted per load, which suits a big clear-out of a shed, yard or paddock corner.

Questions

Yuroke Garden Care FAQ

Is Yuroke part of suburban Melbourne?

Not in the usual sense. Yuroke is a rural locality outside the Urban Growth Boundary, so it has stayed as farms and acreage while Greenvale, Craigieburn and Mickleham have filled with estates around it. It is in the City of Hume, about 12 km from our Glenroy base.

How much does it cost to mow an acreage block in Yuroke?

It depends on the area of grass, the slope and how long it has been left. Larger lawns start in the $70 to $110 plus band on our pricing page, and full acreage is quoted once we know the size. Quotes are free on 0448 215 297.

When should long grass around a Yuroke house be cut?

Before it dries off. On open acreage the grass grows fast through spring and then cures quickly as the summer heat arrives, so cutting around the house, sheds and driveway from late spring and keeping it short through summer is the sensible routine.
