Local Garden Care in Meadow Heights

Your GMC Team in Meadow Heights

Meadow Heights is a tightly held residential suburb in Melbourne's north, a short drive up Pascoe Vale Road from GMC's Glenroy base, known for its family homes, parks and the green corridor along Moonee Ponds Creek. Most blocks are medium-sized house lots with a mix of established gardens and newer builds.

What we know about Meadow Heights gardens

  • The heavy basalt clay across Meadow Heights holds water through winter and bakes hard in summer, so spring coring and the right mowing height make a real difference to lawn health here.
  • Many homes back onto parkland and the creek corridor, which means boundary hedges need regular trimming to stay neat and stop running grasses creeping in from the reserves.
  • Front-yard presentation matters on these tidy residential streets โ€” a crisp mow and a hard edge noticeably lift street appeal.

About Meadow Heights

Meadow Heights is bounded by Somerton Road to the north, Pascoe Vale Road to the east, Barry Road to the south and Broadmeadows Valley Park to the west. While still open country it was known as Broadmeadows North. The Housing Commission started building here in 1975 under the name Westmeadows Heights, and in 1986 the Urban Land Authority took over around 230 hectares and created about 3000 house blocks, with the suburb finished in the 1990s. Broadmeadows Valley Park, the largest of its many parks, runs from Meadow Heights south to Jacana with a bike trail beside it, and Coolaroo station sits just to the south-east. GMC is based in Glenroy, about 6 km to the south.

Soil, water and weather

Meadow Heights was built in stages over about twenty years, so the ground under a garden depends on when the block was developed. Gardens from the late 1970s have had longer to build up organic matter, while blocks finished in the late 1980s and 1990s are more likely to have a thin layer of imported topsoil over compacted fill, the same problem seen in newer estates further north. Both sit on the basalt plain. Yards on the western side fall toward Broadmeadows Valley Park. A spade pushed into the worst patch of lawn quickly shows which kind you have: dark crumbly soil, or a few centimetres of topsoil over hard clay.

Jobs that suit Meadow Heights gardens

  • Lawn mowing: Most Meadow Heights house lots are medium-sized, so front and back lawns usually sit in the standard band on our pricing guide, around $50 to $65 a visit. Weekly or fortnightly mowing gets the best per-visit rate.
  • Garden clean ups: Homes from the first Westmeadows Heights stage are now close to fifty years old, and their gardens often carry shrubs that have grown over windows, paths and fences. A clean up cuts them back, clears the beds and removes all the green waste on the day.
  • Synthetic turf: Where a small front yard or narrow side strip will not hold grass on thin estate soil, synthetic turf is a tidy alternative that stays green through a dry summer. It is quoted per job after measuring the area.

Questions

Meadow Heights Garden Care FAQ

Where is GMC based in relation to Meadow Heights?

GMC is based in Glenroy, about 6 km south of Meadow Heights in a straight line. Meadow Heights is well within the area we cover, along with Roxburgh Park, Coolaroo, Greenvale and Attwood around it. For a free quote, ring 0448 215 297.

What is Broadmeadows Valley Park?

It is the long park on the western side of Meadow Heights and the suburb's largest, running south from Meadow Heights to Jacana with a bike trail alongside. Homes backing onto it see extra wind-blown leaf and seed at the rear fence, so that boundary is worth clearing each season.

Do the newer Meadow Heights blocks need different lawn care?

Often, yes. Blocks finished by the Urban Land Authority in the late 1980s and 1990s can have a thin layer of topsoil over compacted clay. Those lawns respond best to coring, gypsum and topdressing in spring, followed by a higher cut through summer.

Do you do one-off garden clean ups in Meadow Heights?
