Local Garden Care in Coolaroo
Your GMC Team in Coolaroo
Coolaroo is a compact, well-established suburb adjacent to Meadow Heights and Broadmeadows, with a strong residential character and open grassland reserves on its southern edge. Gardens are typically low-maintenance family yards on level blocks.
What we know about Coolaroo gardens
- Coolaroo's flat, open blocks are exposed to wind and sun, so drought-tolerant grass and deep, infrequent watering pay off through a dry summer.
- Many homes have mature front hedges โ photinia and lilly pilly are the local favourites โ that stay dense with a scheduled trim twice a year.
- The nearby grassland reserves blow weed seed into adjacent gardens, so regular feeding and mowing to keep the lawn dense is the most effective weed control here.

About Coolaroo
Coolaroo lies between the Craigieburn line on the west and the Upfield line on the east, with Meadow Heights beyond the railway, Roxburgh Park to the north, Dallas to the south and Campbellfield across the Upfield line. The Housing Commission bought the land in 1951 but did not start building until 1966, and most of the suburb went up by 1972. Until the 1990s Coolaroo also took in the land west of the railway and Pascoe Vale Road that is now Meadow Heights. Coolaroo station on the Craigieburn line finally opened in 2010, almost forty years after plans for it first surfaced, and Upfield station on Barry Road marks the eastern boundary. The name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning brown snake.
Soil, water and weather
Coolaroo is flat basalt plain, and the clay under its lawns behaves the way it does across the north: sticky and slow to drain after winter rain, then hard and cracked by late summer. The Bureau of Meteorology's Melbourne Airport station, the nearest long-running record, averages about 537 mm of rain a year, so lawns here go through long dry stretches between December and March. Older gardens may have built up some organic matter at the surface since the late 1960s, but the subsoil underneath is still heavy. In practice the best results come from a higher cut over summer and a feed in early autumn once the heat breaks.
Jobs that suit Coolaroo gardens
- Lawn mowing: Coolaroo's level, regular blocks make for straightforward mowing, and front and back lawns usually fall in the small to standard range on our pricing guide, about $45 to $65 a visit. Booking a weekly or fortnightly round brings the per-visit price down.
- Garden clean ups: Gardens planted in the late 1960s have had more than fifty years to grow, and shrubs, vines and self-sown trees often crowd fences and paths. A clean up cuts them back, clears the weeds and leaves the yard easy to keep, with all green waste removed on the day.
- Rubbish removal: Rubbish removal is quoted per load and takes general rubbish as well as green waste, which suits a Coolaroo yard being cleared after a move, between tenants or before a renovation starts.
