Local Garden Care in Jacana
Your GMC Team in Jacana
Jacana is a small, peaceful residential suburb tucked along the Moonee Ponds Creek, bordered by parkland and walking trails. Its quiet cul-de-sacs and established homes make it a hidden pocket with mature, leafy gardens.
What we know about Jacana gardens
- Jacana's creekside position means many gardens back onto parkland, so boundary maintenance and controlling weeds spreading in from the reserve is a recurring need.
- Established trees throughout Jacana create genuinely shaded gardens, where a shade-tolerant lawn variety and selective canopy lifting keep things in balance.
- The quiet, low-traffic streets make Jacana an easy suburb for regular weekly and fortnightly maintenance rounds.

About Jacana
Jacana sits between the Craigieburn railway line and the Moonee Ponds Creek, just north of the Western Ring Road. Its southern streets were first laid out in 1923 on land once farmed by Duncan Kennedy, but most of the houses there were built by the Housing Commission in the 1950s, when some streets were renamed after athletes from the 1956 Olympics. Jacana station opened in 1959 to serve the new homes, and the northern section of the suburb followed in the early 1970s as the southern end of the Commission's Meadow Fair estate. On the creek side, Jacana Reserve and its two ovals sit on what was a rubbish tip in the 1970s, used to fill a small valley that held a tributary of the creek.
Soil, water and weather
Jacana is on the edge of the Moonee Ponds Creek valley, so its ground is less uniform than the street map suggests. The upper streets sit on the basalt plain's heavy clay, which stays wet through winter and cracks in a dry summer, while yards on the creek side slope down toward the valley and take run-off after heavy rain. On those sloping blocks the bottom fence line is where silt, leaf and clippings collect, and clearing it after winter keeps water moving instead of pooling against fences and sheds. Lawns on the slopes dry out first in summer, so a slightly longer cut from December helps them hold on until autumn.
Jobs that suit Jacana gardens
- Lawn mowing: Lawn mowing is priced on size and access: about $45 for a small lawn and around $50 to $65 for a standard family block front and back. Sloping yards on the valley side are quoted once we have seen them.
- Garden clean ups: Gardens planted when the 1950s Housing Commission homes were new often have shrubs and climbers that have swallowed paths and side gates. A clean up cuts them back to a manageable size, weeds and edges the beds, and takes the green waste away the same day.
- Hedge trimming: Where a back fence faces the railway line or a reserve path, a dense hedge gives privacy and screens the view, but only while its height stays within reach. Hedge trimming starts from $60, and taller screens are priced by height and access.

Questions
Jacana Garden Care FAQ
When was most of Jacana built?
The southern streets were laid out in 1923, but most houses there went up in the 1950s under the Housing Commission, and the northern section followed in the early 1970s. Gardens from both periods now have mature trees and shrubs, and many can be pruned back in stages rather than removed.
What grows best on a Jacana block that slopes toward the creek?
On a slope above the Moonee Ponds Creek valley, lawn is awkward to mow and dries out first. Groundcovers and tough native grasses hold the clay and need far less upkeep. Where lawn stays, a higher cut and a clean edge at the bottom of the slope keep it tidy.
